I worked as a housekeeping supervisor for a large hotel group. My Husband and I decided we’d like to live closer to family so moved a 120 miles to Wiltshire. I didn’t want to continue in hotel work so took a little time out to settle in my new home. I soon realised that I enjoyed home life, so my son and daughter in law came up with the idea of making dogs accessories, and with their help they built me a website, taught me lots about running a small business. Within a few months I was the proud owner of my own website.
The name was hard to choose, again the family all worked together on this, we came up with several ideas but none seemed right, so we took a little from each idea and ended up with Smart Dogs Boutique. I run my business alone, and Smart Dogs Boutique will be 4 years old on June 16th.
I started just making collars and leads for the families dogs then increased my range for the website, as I shopped for fabrics I realised I could make a lot more so started to design Bandanas, coats, beds.
"What I love the most is being able to offer my customers unique items."
My days vary but all include sewing, I’ve my website to keep up to date, social media post to plan, ordering new fabrics. I like being able to choose my own working hours. Challenges include finding the same fabric.
“I had one customer that came to my stall admired all the products saying how beautiful they are and she love all the colours. She then picked up a doggie bow said to her husband do you like this to go with your new outfit, she was a little shocked when I said they’re for dogs.”
I don’t have any doggies of my own, but I love being the proud nanny to Bertie, Toby and Betty. They all often come to stay and I love every moment with them. I’m not good at relaxing, but love time with the family, going for long walks and enjoying a relaxing cruise with my hubby.
